River Godavari, the second longest river after Ganga , is reverd in the Hindu scriptures for many millennia and continues to harbour and nourish a rich cultural heritage as Dakshin Ganga. Originating at Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra , Godavari flows towards east for 1,465Kms.and forms the 2nd biggest river basin with 3,12,812.Kms. The river flows through the States of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Yanam in Puducherry before flowing into Bay of Bengal . Nashik, Banded, Rajahmundry and Nizamabad are some of major towns that thrive on the banks of the river. The ' Kumbh Mela' that is conducted in Nashik for Centuries is a major pilgrimage attraction.
