River Cauvery, the largest river in Tamil Nadu and third largest in South India, was referred as" Poni " in the 300 BCE Sangam literature. Originating at Talkaveri in Kodagu, Karnataka , the river runs for a length of 805 Kms.,has a basin of 81,155 Sq. Kms., Covers three States and the UT. Of Puducherry and finally enters Bay of Bengal at Poompuhar. Cauvery water being shared among Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, is the major source of irrigation for centuries and serves as the lifeline of these States . Alongside the river, major towns like Mysuru, Srirangapatna, Erode Karur, Trichy and Kumbhakonam arre located.
