River Krishna, also called Krishnaveni, originates at Mahabaleswar in Maharashtra and is the 4th biggest river in India. Flowing for 1,400 Kms through the States of Maharashtra , Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh , the river has a basin of 2,58,948 Sq. Kms., i.e., 8% of the geographical area of India , before entering the Bay of Bengal . Besides severing the irrigation needs of the four states , the water energy of the river is duly harnessed through hydroelectric power projects that helps to generate about 6,000MW of power. The delta of the river is most fertile and was the home to ancient Satavahana and Ikshvaku Sun dynasties.
