River Vaigai that originates in Varusanadu Hills in the Periyar Plateue  of Western Ghats , is 258Kms. long , has a basin of 7,031Sq. Kms and empties into the palk Strait close to Pamban bridge in Ramanathapuram district. The annual event of "Lord of Kallazhagar's entry into the river " is an historical event for centuries and also finds a mention in the Sangam literature . The renowned Madurai Meenakshi Temple is situated on the banks of Vaigai River.
